How we can help you?

When Should You Speak With an Employment Contract Lawyer?

You should consider legal advice before signing if you are:

  • Starting a new job or receiving a promotion
  • Asked to sign a new or updated employment agreement
  • Presented with a contract after already beginning work
  • Transitioning to a fixed-term or performance-based role
  • Given restrictions on future employment, clients, or competition

Many employees in Toronto are pressured to sign quickly — but once you sign, your legal rights and options may change significantly.

What Does an Employment Contract Lawyer Review?

An employment contract review lawyer looks beyond the wording itself and focuses on how Ontario courts actually interpret employment agreements.

Key clauses we review include:

  • Termination clauses and severance entitlements
  • Fixed-term provisions and early termination risks
  • Non-solicitation, non-competition, and restrictive covenants
  • Compensation terms, bonuses, commissions, and incentives
  • Probationary periods and notice provisions
  • Clauses that may violate Ontario employment standards legislation
  • Importantly, many employment contracts are partially — or entirely — unenforceable, even when employers describe them as “standard.”

Why Legal Advice Matters Before You Sign

Employment agreements are often drafted to reduce an employer’s future liability — not necessarily to protect employees.

However:

  • Poorly drafted clauses may be unenforceable under Ontario law
  • Ambiguous or illegal terms are frequently struck down by courts
  • Employees may still be entitled to substantial severance pay despite what the contract states

A Toronto employment contract lawyer can explain what is likely to hold up in court — not just what appears in the agreement.

Toronto Employment Contract Drafting & Negotiation

Legal advice is not limited to reviewing contracts. It can also help you negotiate stronger terms before signing.

We regularly assist Toronto employees with:

  • Reviewing employer-drafted agreements
  • Advising on proposed changes before execution
  • Negotiating severance and termination language
  • Clarifying vague, one-sided, or restrictive provisions

Even small wording changes can have significant financial consequences later.
